Thank you. The worry is a valuable monster. Like a helpful Nurakabe it blocks the writer from the direct and simple path towards something more complex, beautiful and truthful. There are no rules, there is no map, but this is good advice for anyone attempting the journey.
For writers who happen to be in step with the majority and power in their homeland, recognize that you will never understand the effects of power and privilege from a place of power and privilege. Might I suggest:
- Read from and listen to people who aren’t like yourself.
- Do something that puts you out of step with the crowd, for David Crosby “I almost cut my hair” it was long hair, for Ray Bradbury, it was walking in a country where everyone drove a car.
- Travel or emigrate to somewhere where you don’t fit in.
- Remind yourself that no matter how hard you try, you won’t be able to walk a mile in another’s moccasins and even if you could, a mile is only the beginning of this journey.
